Abstract

Introduction: Obesity is a predictor of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). In this context, there is strong evidence that the incidence of GERD is higher in obese patients who have undergone bariatric surgery (BS). Objective: Understand the relationship between GERD in patients undergoing CB. Methodology: This is an integrative review of the literature, used as databases from the VHL, PubMed and Scielo. After a careful selection, 17 articles were chosen for analysis and review. Results: The selected studies addressed the association between bariatric patients and the occurrence or worsening of GERD. It was found that RYGB improved GERD symptoms, being considered an antireflux operation. Other techniques, such as sleeve gastrectomy and laparoscopic adjusted gastric banding, may increase the risk of acid reflux. Conclusion: GERD is a potential postoperative complication, depending on the patient's medical history and the choice of CB. More comprehensive studies containing the specificities according to the comorbidities of each patient and each surgical technique involved are substantial to better understand the topic and understand it.
