Abstract

In the craniofacial region, the most common problems are related to maxillary atresia. Since one of the functions of orthodontics is to harmonize the relationship between teeth, bones and the discrepancy of the maxilla in relation to the mandible, thus returning patients to their proper masticatory function and aesthetics. However, the orthodontist must have a good knowledge of the anatomical structures involved in the selected biomechanics, based on careful planning; which involves several cephalometric analyses, model analyzes and among other aspects. The article aims to carry out a literature review on rapid maxillary expansion, highlighting the following appliances: Haas, Hyrax and MARPE. Each device has its advantage, disadvantage or limitation, as well as indications. The article's methodology was based on secondary data available in electronic databases. It was concluded that the Haas, Hyrax and MARPE appliances can be used for transverse gain of the dental arch, as long as they are well planned and with knowledge of their containment phase.
