Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases, such as myocardial infarction and stroke, are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. This study conducted an integrative literature review on the impact of chronic exposure to air pollutants, such as fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sulfur dioxide (SO2), on the risk of these conditions. The results indicated that pollutants trigger pathophysiological processes, including systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, and endothelial dysfunction, which are directly associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, the interaction with genetic and environmental factors, such as urban noise and extreme climatic variations, amplifies adverse effects. It was also found that green spaces in urban centers can mitigate these risks, emphasizing the importance of public policies aimed at reducing pollution and promoting cardiovascular health. Preventive strategies and further studies on environmental and genetic interactions are recommended.
