The impact of knowledge and adherence of women regarding the performance of pap smears in health services: integrative review

This is study aimed to investigate the impact of knowledge and adherence of women regarding the Papanicolau test in health services through an integrative review. This is an integrative literature review, conducted in the online databases of the Regional Medical Library: Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences and the Nursing Database. The study sample consisted of 23 articles whose search consisted of selecting scientific articles published during the period from 2015 to 2025. The following descriptors were used to capture the sample: "Cervical neoplasms", "Pap test", "Patient cooperation". With the results it was realized the importance of performing the PCCU, when indicated and in the presence of symptoms by women in order to early identification of precursor lesions of cervical cancer. The study also showed the lack of knowledge related to the theme, especially the age and frequency of the exam. Furthermore, women have some barriers to adherence to Pap smears, such as lack of knowledge about the screening; emotional barriers, such as fear/social stigma; social barriers, such as support from family and friends; and cultural barriers, such as taboos regarding the discussion of sexually related topics. Therefore, women's lack of knowledge about cervical cancer has a direct impact on low adherence to preventive exams, negatively influencing their quality of life. It is necessary to investigate patients' access to information, as well as intensify the active search for these women.
