Reverse planning in implantology is essential to ensure the success of the surgical and prosthetic phases, prioritizing prosthetic rehabilitation before implant installation. This concept guides the position, quantity and type of implants to be used, ensuring an adequate aesthetic and functional result. Advanced technologies, such as surgical guides and planning software, have improved this approach, making it more precise and predictable. Thus, this review seeks to present a synthesis of the main approaches and applications of reverse planning, contributing to the understanding of its importance and effectiveness in different academic and professional settings. This is a literature review with a qualitative, descriptive and retrospective approach. Data were collected from databases such as SCIELO, BVS and Google Scholar, considering publications from the last 25 years. The inclusion criteria included articles in Portuguese and English directly related to the topic, while studies outside the time frame or without specific relevance were excluded. Twenty-one relevant articles on the topic were selected. Reverse planning has been shown to be fundamental in implantology, ensuring the correct distribution of masticatory forces and preventing failures in rehabilitation. Studies highlight its importance in critical aesthetic regions, such as the anterior maxilla, where functional, phonetic and structural factors directly influence the success of the treatment. The use of surgical guides and advanced software has improved the predictability of implant installation, reducing risks and optimizing results. Reverse planning has established itself as an essential pillar in modern implantology. The collaboration between the dental technician and the prosthetist, the use of innovative technologies and a multidisciplinary approach ensure greater predictability, longevity and quality in treatments. The integration of radiological examinations, virtual planning and adequate management of peri-implant tissues are determining factors for the success of implant-supported rehabilitation.
