Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is the term used to describe liver test abnormalities and liver dysfunction caused by various medications. In recent decades, the use of herbal supplements, natural products and alternative medicines has increased considerably, which is consistently underreported by patients. Despite the popular belief that the consumption of natural products is harmless, herbs can cause damage to various organs. This is especially true for the liver, which is responsible for your metabolism. Even in the absence of data proving safety or efficacy, the market for herbal and alternative medicines has expanded greatly, reaching as much as US$83.1 billion in 2012. Herbal-induced liver injury (HILI) is a term currently used to describe herbal medicine-related liver injuries, which both doctors and patients should be aware of.
