Abstract
Titanium is widely used in implantology due to its biocompatibility and mechanical properties. However, complications such as metal allergies may arise. In aesthetic areas, zirconia stands out for its similar appearance to natural teeth and aesthetic advantages, especially in cases of gummy smile. Objectives: The study reviews the literature of the last 10 years, analyzing the main applications and advantages of zirconia implants, especially in aesthetic areas. The research focuses on the replacement of titanium implants in situations that impair high aesthetics, such as thin gums and gummy smiles. Methodology: Terms in English and Portuguese from DeCS and MeSH were used: “Dental implants”, “Dental zirconia”, “Bone regeneration” and “Biocompatible materials”. The Boolean operator “AND” connected the terms. Inclusion criteria: original articles and books; exclusion: TCCs, theses and dissertations. PubMed, Google Scholar and SciELO were consulted. Results: The study evaluated the performance of zirconia implants with different types of surfaces and found an overall success rate of 95% after five years of follow-up. Acid-etched implants showed the best results, with effective osseointegration and functional stability, or even superior to titanium. Conclusion: Zirconia implants were considered an effective alternative to titanium, especially in aesthetic areas, due to their high success rate and osseointegration. Surface treatment, such as acid application, further improves the performance of implants. The choice of material should consider both aesthetic and functional factors to ensure the longevity of the rehabilitation.
