Tooth loss in the posterior maxillary region leads to bone tissue resorption and pneumatization of the maxillary sinus, resulting in a limited and atrophic ridge. In these cases, maxillary sinus floor augmentation surgery for bone grafting is indicated for rehabilitation with dental implants. This procedure is safe and effective, but may present intra- and postoperative complications. This study aims to understand the complications associated with maxillary sinus augmentation and strategies for their management. The search for articles was carried out in the PubMed, Virtual Health Library and Scielo databases. DeCS/meSH indexed descriptors were used, as follows: “Sinus Floor Augmentation” AND “Complications” AND “Surgery, Oral” OR “Dental Surgery”. Articles published between 2014 and 2024, in Portuguese, English or Spanish, were included. Thus, it was possible to observe that the most common intraoperative complications are perforation of the Schneider membrane, which can occur during osteotomy or when the membrane is detached, and hemorrhage, which must be controlled with local hemostatic measures. Postoperative complications include graft infections, sinusitis, surgical ciliated cyst and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Therefore, it is concluded that it is essential for the implantologist to be aware of the possible complications that may be associated with this procedure, as well as their management, so that possible complications can be prevented or even avoided. In addition, it is necessary to emphasize the importance of carefully examining the patient's health status to detect possible risk factors and of monitoring associated with an otorhinolaryngologist.
