Abstract

This article reviews the scientific literature on the surgical management of patients with schizophrenia and physical trauma, with an emphasis on the challenges encountered in emergency care. The research, conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases using the terms "Schizophrenia, Physical trauma, Surgical management, Emergency," reveals that patients with schizophrenia often face additional complications during the treatment of physical trauma due to the nature of the illness and its psychopathological impact. Psychiatric symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and impaired judgment can interfere with treatment adherence, complicate pain management, and affect postoperative recovery. The management of these patients requires an interdisciplinary approach, with collaboration among surgeons, psychiatrists, psychologists, and emergency professionals, to address both the physical and psychological aspects of the trauma. Surgical treatment must be adapted to consider psychiatric comorbidities, focusing on mental stabilization and the control of psychotic symptoms. Interventions such as psychotherapeutic support, adjustment of antipsychotic medications, and continuous monitoring of mental status are essential to ensure effective physical and psychological recovery for these patients.
