Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Body dysmorphic disorder is characterized by an excessive concern with defects in physical appearance, with behavior and mental acts to fix or hide the perceived flaw. Excessive use of social media may be related to the development and persistence of this disorder. OBJECTIVES: To analyze the scientific literature on the impact of social media on body dysmorphic disorder. METHODS: It consists of a systematic review, carried out between January and March 2024, in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar and Scopus databases using the search strategy (“body dysmorphic disorder”) AND (“social media”). Articles between 2020 and 2024, in any language, were included, obtaining 3022 studies. Duplicates (9) and those that did not meet the research objective (2997) were excluded, leaving 16 articles. RESULTS: Several countries with studies on the subject were identified, highlighting the globality of the problem. Findings include associations between screen time and symptoms of muscle dysmorphia, an increase in disorders during the COVID-19 lockdown, and specific concerns such as skin problems and body dissatisfaction. Instagram and Snapchat were the main social networks cited. Correlations with eating disorders, anxiety, and social phobia were also explored. CONCLUSION: The impact of social networks on body dysmorphic disorder is concluded, highlighting significant associations between heavy use of them and the prevalence of the disorder. In addition, the influence of unattainable beauty standards is highlighted, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
