Abstract
Introduction: Autoimmune pancreatitis is an uncommon type of chronic pancreatic disease, resulting from an immune-mediated process. Given that it is a chronic fibroinflammatory disorder, autoimmune pancreatitis may constitute a premalignant factor and could be associated with the oncogenesis of pancreatic cancer. Objective: Summarize current knowledge about the relationship between autoimmune pancreatitis and the development of pancreatic cancer. Methods: A search for articles was carried out in scientific databases Pubmed, Scielo, ScienceDirect and Cochrane using the terms autoimmune pancreatitis, cancer, carcinoma, pancreatic tumor. Articles that aimed to analyze the correlation between autoimmune pancreatitis and the development of malignant lesions were included in this literature review. Results and discussion: 17 studies were selected, contabilizing a total of 7411 patients diagnosed with autoimmune pancreatitis, 65% of studies reported the presence of pancreatic cancer, 23.5% found the presence of other types of cancer and 11.5% described an increased prevalence of preneoplastic lesions in patients with autoimmune pancreatitis. Conclusions: The association between autoimmune pancreatitis and the oncogenesis of pancreatic carcinoma presents conflicting evidence in literature, although the correlation between both pathologies should not be discarded.
