Abstract
Introduction: Heart failure (HF) is a clinical syndrome in which the heart is unable to pump blood to meet tissue metabolic needs, or can do so only at high filling pressures. HF is a serious, usually progressive and irreversible complication that can affect most cardiac patients. Objective: This article aims to provide an epidemiological analysis of the distribution and impacts of heart failure in Brazil and its macroregions, from January 2014 to June 2024. Methodology: This is a retrospective epidemiological study with a quantitative and temporal approach, with data regarding the prevalence and impacts of hospitalizations from 2014 to 2024, in the five Brazilian regions. Results: A total of 2,105,962 hospitalizations for heart failure (HF) were recorded in Brazil. The Southeast region had the highest number of cases, with 885,365 hospitalizations (42%), followed by the Northeast (22.8%) and South (22.4%) regions. These regions also stood out for the highest number of deaths, where the Southeast region had 46% of deaths, followed by the Northeast (22%) and South (19%), totaling 239,704 deaths in the period. The average hospital stay varied between regions, being highest in the Northeast (8.3 days) and lowest in the Central-West (6.3 days), which highlights the possibility of inequalities in access and quality of health services. Analysis by age group revealed that 87.9% of hospitalizations occurred in individuals aged 50 or over, with emphasis on those aged 80 or over. Regarding the distribution by race/color, the white population had the highest number of hospitalizations and in relation to sex, there was a predominance of males. Conclusion: Mortality caused by HF is constantly associated with individual, social, economic and health service indicators. Therefore, HF syndrome has different epidemiological and regional aspects, mainly in the diversity of etiopathogenesis. In this sense, there is a need for improvement in the quality of care and greater actions by the government to raise awareness among the population about how to prevent HF and how to correctly treat the onset of this disease.
