Tooth loss and changes in the alveolar ridge represent significant challenges for dentistry, directly impacting patients' quality of life. Alveolar bone preservation using biomaterials aims to minimize tissue resorption after tooth extraction, improving both aesthetic and functional outcomes. The objective of the present study is to report the techniques and biomaterials most commonly used for this purpose. This is an integrative literature review, primarily addressing the advantages and disadvantages of materials employed in guided bone regeneration following tooth extractions. An advanced search strategy was used with the descriptors "guided bone regeneration," "alveolar bone preservation," and "dental implants." These descriptors were applied in the BVS and PubMed databases, combined using the Boolean operator AND in their linguistic variants (Portuguese, English, and Spanish), including randomized clinical trials from the past 5 years. After critical reading of titles and abstracts, 13 articles were selected for full analysis. The filling of the alveolus with Deproteinized Bovine Bone Mineral (DBBM) covered with a collagen membrane remains the material of choice, although other biomaterials have shown excellent and promising results.
