Abstract

Introduction: Febrile seizures are seizures that occur in children between 6 months and 5 years of age, when there is a sudden increase in body temperature, due to the immaturity of the central nervous system. Objectives: This study consists of a literature review that was carried out to identify and synthesize the available evidence on the mechanisms behind febrile seizures in children and their associations with infections. Methodology: Research carried out in December 2024, based on an integrative review of the scientific literature in the SciELo, BVS and PubMed databases. Results and Discussion: The pathophysiology of CF involves genetic factors and the immaturity of the central nervous system (CNS), which makes children more susceptible to febrile stimuli. The increase in temperature can impair electrical conduction in the CNS, triggering seizures. Conclusion: Understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms, including the immaturity of the central nervous system and the influence of genetic factors, is essential for the identification of risk factors and for adequate clinical management.
