Abstract
Obesity is a medical condition that affects a large part of the world's population, being considered a serious public health problem, due to its high risk to the health of individuals, the high cost to society and social marginalization. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines obesity as a chronic non-communicable disease (NCD), multifactorial, characterized by excessive concentration of adipose tissue, at a level that can be harmful to health, increasing the chances of developing other diseases. comorbidities. Addressing obesity is of paramount importance to understanding the demands of collective health. Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify the profile of hospitalizations due to obesity in Brazil, in the year 2022. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, ecological and quantitative study of the epidemiological profile of hospitalizations due to obesity, carried out with data obtained through the System of Hospital Information (SIH) of the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). The selected variables were: hospitalizations, sex, age group (< 1 year to ≥ 80 years) and deaths. Data tabulation and descriptive analysis were performed using the Microsoft Office Excel program (Microsoft©, 2013). In the period from 2018 to 2022, there were 49,592 hospitalizations due to obesity, with the highest prevalence found in the South region (48.8%) and 38.1% in the Southeast. 86% of admissions were female, while males accounted for 13.2%. With regard to age group, it appears that 32.4% were between 30 and 39 years old. 46.7% of deaths occurred in the Southeast and 39.4% in the South. Therefore, greater investment in prevention and intervention strategies is extremely important, with the aim of reducing the development of obesity, especially among groups that are more susceptible to the disease, in this way such strategies would contribute to the reduction of frequent hospitalizations caused by the disease. obesity and consequently would promote better quality of life for the Brazilian population.
