Complications of using Methylphenidate as therapy In pediatric ADHD

Introduction: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common diagnosis in pediatrics, primarily characterized by attention difficulties, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The aim of this study was to discuss complications associated with the use of Methylphenidate as a treatment for ADHD in pediatric patients, in order to mitigate adverse effects and achieve optimal therapeutic outcomes. Methodology: This was an integrative literature review. The Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS/MeSH) platform was utilized with the keywords "ADHD" AND "Methylphenidate" AND "Complications" AND "Children" in both English and Portuguese. A search was conducted in PubMed, BVS, and Scopus databases, yielding 140 studies. Inclusion criteria were articles that were "free full text", published within the last 5 years, relevant to the research question, and in either Portuguese or English. Ultimately, 37 articles were included, with 11 duplicates removed, leaving 26 for this study. Results: Adverse effects associated with Methylphenidate use in pediatric patients diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder were observed, such as reduced sleep time, growth restriction, visual impairments, and agitation. Conclusion: Therefore, it was evident that there are various repercussions linked to Methylphenidate use in pediatric patients with ADHD. Given these multifactorial effects, understanding each patient's condition is crucial to finding the best therapeutic approach and mitigating unfavorable outcomes associated with Methylphenidate use.
