Abstract
Osteomas are benign osteogenic neoplasms that grow slowly and are usually asymptomatic. However, in more advanced cases, they can cause discomfort due to compression of vessels and nerves, in addition to affecting function and aesthetics. Although they are most commonly found in the craniofacial region, they are considered rare when it comes to the mandibular coronoid process. This study aims to report a rare case of osteoma in the left coronoid process, with a surgical approach associated with coronoidectomy during excision of the lesion. Case report: A 33-year-old female patient, of mixed race, sought the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology service of Hospital COT – Salvador/BA, with limited mouth opening and complaints of pain in the left hemiface. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed a well-defined hyperdense image with a "mushroom" shape, which is suggestive of osteoma. Excisional biopsy associated with coronoidectomy under general anesthesia was chosen as the therapeutic plan. After 3 years postoperatively, the patient completed the follow-up without clinical and imaging signs of recurrence of the lesion. Considering the substantial improvement in mandibular excursive movements and satisfactory mouth opening, the good prognosis related to the surgical approach associated with coronoidectomy during excision of the lesion is evident.
