Abstract

Introduction: Postoperative pain management is key to post-surgical recovery, usually managed with opioids, which present significant risks. Transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block emerges as a promising technique. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of the transversus abdominis plane block in the management of postoperative pain. Methodology: Narrative review of studies from 2018-2024, using databases such as PubMed. Articles comparing TAP with other techniques in reducing pain and opioid use were considered. Results: TAP was shown to be effective in various surgeries, especially abdominal, reducing pain and opioid consumption. Studies highlighted its effectiveness in gynecological laparotomies and bariatric surgery. Discussion: TAP was compared favorably with other anesthetic techniques, integrating multimodal analgesia strategies and standing out in the management of acute pain. However, some studies indicated that it does not always overcome the quadratus lumborum block. Conclusion: TAP is a safe and effective technique for postoperative pain management. Although it offers significant benefits, the results are diverse, suggesting the need to standardize methods and continue research.
