Abstract

The aim of this article is to review the literature on the surgical technique of laparotomy. The National Library of Medicine (Pubmed), Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Cochrane Library databases were used to search for articles that met the study's inclusion and exclusion criteria. In the final selection of this review, 5 articles were obtained, which highlighted that laparotomy causes longer hospital stays for patients when compared to other techniques. In addition, there is an increased risk of infection, among other post-surgical complications. Thus, laparotomy is still the procedure of choice for the treatment of acute abdomen, but the existence of new surgical techniques means that laparotomy is no longer the first choice for the surgical treatment of acute abdomen.
