TREATMENT OF PYTHIOSIS IN HORSES

Pythiosis is a disease caused by the fungus Pythium insidiosumde and generates a granulomatous lesion, most often affecting the skin and subcutaneous tissue of domestic animals, wild animals and humans. On June 12, 2019, a large animal was admitted to Estância toca da Seriema / Comunidade Morro de São Gerônimo - Cuiabá - MT; an eight-year-old male gelding, presenting a circular lesion in the ventral region of the abdomen, draining serosanguinous secretion, areas of necrosis and the presence of small firm yellowish granules, called “Kunkers”, a common finding in pythiosis lesions, after a detailed anamnesis and physical examination, it was possible to obtain a presumptive diagnosis of equine pythiosis, which was later confirmed by histopathological examination. The treatment instituted for the animal was the use of triamcinolone acetate, 50 mg/animal intramuscularly with an interval of 15 days, in a total of two applications, associated with daily cleaning of the lesion with 2% chlorhexidine, anti-optic ointment and repellent spray administered in the area adjacent to the edges of the wound, during the entire intention phase, which was from May 20th to July 3rd. The treatment resulted in a great improvement in healing, reducing the size of the pruritus lesion, which was absent 19 days after the start of therapy, proving to be an excellent alternative in the treatment of equine pythiosis.
