Abstract

The stomatognathic system is exposed to various stimulus, both endogenous and exogenous, increasing the propensity of the oral cavity to develop pathological conditions, which can range from benign to potentially malignant and malignant. Contributing factors to the development of benign lesions include chronic trauma, chronic inflammatory processes and genetic predispositions. In contrast, the factors associated with the development of potentially malignant disorders and malignant neoplasms involve a series of environmental and behavioral exposures, including excessive alcohol consumption and smoking, which have been widely recognized as important factors in the development of tumors of an aggressive nature. Thus, it is essential for health professionals to know about prevalent oral lesions to offer individualized treatments. Benign proliferative lesions, such as fibromas and inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia, are common in the oral cavity and can compromise tissue composition and vital functions. Classified as a reactive hyperplastic lesion, inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia occurs because of chronic trauma and manifests clinically as asymptomatic nodules, with excisional biopsy / surgical excision followed by histopathological analysis being the indication for treatment. In addition, appropriate treatment includes identifying and correcting the triggering factor that caused the lesion.
