This article aims to review the literature on the effects of social networks on mental health in adolescents. Using scientific article websites such as SCIELO and PUBMED to find articles in Portuguese and English. The time spent surfing the internet is 2 to 3 hours a day, on average. It is worth highlighting that teenagers recognize advantages and disadvantages of the internet. As advantages, speed, economy, meeting people, increasing the number of friends and not needing to be present in the same physical space were mentioned. The disadvantages were the possibility of addiction, the dangers when surfing the internet and the lack of physical contact. However, awareness needs to be raised to resolve the problem.
