Obesity can be explained, in a simple way, as a deposit of body fat that is related to health risks, as it is related to many metabolic complications. General Objective: to describe the impact of hypoglycemic agents in the treatment of obesity. Methodology: The collection of information for the bibliographic research occurred through the exploration of the databases of the Virtual Health Library (BVS), Virtual Electronic Scientific Library (SCIELO) and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS). Results and Discussion: The main hypoglycemic agents used in the treatment of diabetes and consequently influential in weight loss are Sulfonylureas, Biguanides Meglitinides, Thiazolidinediones, dipeptidyl peptidase IV inhibitors, and alpha glucosidase inhibitors. Final Considerations: Through the development of this study, it was possible to understand the mechanism of action of hypoglycemic agents used in weight loss, considering that this is an adverse reaction of drug treatment for diabetes. It is worth noting that the benefits of hypoglycemic agents are linked not only to weight loss, but also to the control of the underlying disease, glycemic control, better quality of life, better disposition, among others. They do not exempt risks, such as those associated with glycemic dysregulation, the development of diabetic ketoacidosis and coma related to a sudden drop in blood glucose.
