ABSTRACT
This integrative review aimed to evaluate the main influences and changes in the temporomandibular joints and their disorders, resulting from third molar extraction procedures, in terms of age, sex and previous complaints of the patients. Materials and methods: The bibliographic survey was carried out through online access to the VHL Brasil (Virtual Health Library), Pubmed (Medical literature Analysis and Retrieval System online) and Scientific Electronic Library (SciELO). The present study suggests that surgical removal of third molars may trigger or worsen temporomandibular disorders. The main manifestations found were: reduction in the maximum opening range of the jaw, increased intensity of the characteristic pain, muscle pain on palpation and pain on palpation of the temporomandibular joint after the third molar extraction procedure. The conclusion of this integrative review is that there is a relationship between the extraction of third molars and temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD), where some authors suggest that opening the mouth for an extended period of time and the use of a variable force on the jaw that occurs in Some surgeries can overload or injure one or both TMJs.
