Abstract
Ankyloglossia “tongue-tie” is an oral anatomical anomaly characterized by a short, thick or thin frenulum. It is often difficult to diagnose due to its variable forms and degrees, requiring better anatomical understanding and multidisciplinary cooperation. There is no test considered the gold standard, requiring adaptation between the Bristol and Martinelli protocols, considered together with the breastfeeding assessment. As a purpose, case studies and analyses were selected with the aim of clarifying the consequences of the lack of conduct related to ankyloglossia in the neonatal phase. Fifteen articles were found, between 2019 and 2024, in English, Portuguese and Spanish, considering case report, cohort and meta-analysis studies. Based on the importance of a good diagnosis and early treatment, it emphasizes the best choice for a less invasive and advantageous surgical procedure, the need for anesthetics in neonates, and tolerable postoperative period. Concluding that there is a need to carry out future research in order to obtain more clinical evidence, for greater effectiveness in the diagnosis and treatment of the lingual frenulum.
