Abstract

Introduction: Orotracheal intubation is an essential procedure, the process is systematized, using a combination of inducing agents and neuromuscular blocking agents to achieve rapid loss of consciousness and muscle relaxation. This review aims to analyze the main inducing drugs used in RSI, their characteristics, advantages and limitations in different clinical scenarios. Methodology: This study is based on an integrative literature review, which sought to gather relevant evidence on the inducing agents used in RSI. The research was conducted in renowned databases, selecting literature published between 2000 and 2023 that addresses medications used in orotracheal intubation. Results and Discussion: Thiopental, one of the first inducing agents used in rapid sequence intubation, is effective in rapid induction, but can cause hypotension. Propofol is efficient in suppressing pharyngeal reflexes, but is also associated with hypotensive effects. Ketamine is recommended in hemodynamically unstable patients. Etomidate, in turn, is the choice for patients who require hemodynamic stability. Succinylcholine remains the standard neuromuscular blocker for RSI, offering rapid onset of action. Final Considerations: The analysis of induction agents in RSI highlights the importance of a careful choice of medications, taking into account the patient's clinical status and the objectives of the procedure.
