Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the challenges faced by laboratory diagnosis in the early detection of cervical cancer. The justification for this research stems from the growing need to improve prevention and early detection strategies for cervical cancer, a condition that, although preventable, still presents high mortality rates in various populations. This is an integrative literature review, and the sample was established based on existing published literature through a search in databases: SCIELO, MEDLINE, and LILACS via the Virtual Health Library (VHL) research portal, using Boolean operators AND with the following health descriptors: “Cervical Cancer” and “Laboratory Diagnosis,” “Prevention” in both Portuguese and English from 2019 to 2024. This research achieved the proposed objective, albeit in a limited manner, regarding the identification difficulties associated with the factors/reasons for unsatisfactory analysis of preventive slides. Through the analyzed articles, a predominance of unsatisfactory exams was observed based on the amount of sample collected and the drying process, regardless of the collection method used. Therefore, from this review, it is hoped that other researchers will recognize this gap concerning these factors/reasons for the unsatisfactory samples in preventive tests and conduct further research to reach a more specific conclusion, even though the results demonstrated are below the quantity established by the Ministry of Health
