Abstract

SUMMARY

This article aims to analyze the use of dental arches as a human identification tool in Forensic Dentistry, seeking to understand their importance and effectiveness in complex forensic contexts. The review was carried out using articles taken from the databases PubMed Central (PMC), Scielo - Scientific Electronic Library Online, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (VHL), The Cochrane Library, Scirus and Periódicos. The keywords were selected according to the Health Sciences Descriptors (DECS): Forensic Dentistry, Forensic Dentistry and Dental Arches. It is concluded that dental arches represent a promising tool in Forensic Dentistry for reconstructing identity in situations where traditional methods fail, such as fires, drownings and advanced decomposition. The review confirms that dental records are essential for ante- and post-mortem comparisons, that dental crowns can assist in determining sex and that dental pulp is crucial for estimating the post-mortem interval, highlighting the importance of Forensic Dentistry in contexts forensics.
