Abstract

The study addresses inguinal hernias, a common condition resulting from a weakness in the abdominal wall, being prevalent in men. Surgical correction is indicated in symptomatic cases or those with a risk of complications. Over the years, several techniques have been developed for treatment, with the Lichtenstein technique standing out for its simplicity and effectiveness, with a low recurrence rate, and laparoscopic techniques such as TAPP and TEP, which offer advantages like faster recovery and less postoperative pain, but with higher cost and technical complexity. The methodology used was an integrative literature review, with searches in renowned databases, analyzing studies published between 1990 and 2023 that compared these techniques. The results showed that both are effective, with the Lichtenstein technique preferred in cases with higher anesthetic risk, although it causes more postoperative discomfort. On the other hand, laparoscopy demonstrated better recovery outcomes, but involved a higher risk of intraoperative complications, especially in less experienced surgeons. It is concluded that the choice of technique should be based on the patient’s profile and the surgeon’s experience, aiming to ensure the best short- and long-term results.
