Abstract

Objective: This integrative review aims to investigate low-level laser therapy protocols for the treatment of oral mucositis in pediatric cancer patients. Materials and methods: The bibliographic selection was carried out through an online search in databases such as the Virtual Health Library (VHL Brazil), Brazilian Bibliography of Dentistry (BBO), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System on-line (PubMed), Online System for Search and Analysis of Medical Literature (MEDLINE). The search was carried out using language filters, selecting English and Portuguese, with a time interval of 05 years (2019-2024), with the following descriptors: 'oral mucositis'', 'laser therapy'' and 'children''. Results: Of the 5 selected studies, each one was carried out in a different country, they are: France, Slovenia, Brazil, Egypt and Italy, the duration occurred in an interval of one year, approximately, with a sample of 14 to 81 patients. In relation to gender, a variation of 36.25% to 57% was observed for females, while males ranged from 43% to 63.75%. Regarding the age group, the average of the same ranged from 8 to 12 years. When we go to wavelength, the variation was from 635 nm to 980 nm, while the energy dose varied from 2 J/cm² to 15.5 J/cm², on the number of sessions there was a discrepancy between 4 and 146 sessions. Conclusion: it is concluded that the use of low-level laser is a very effective approach in the management of oral mucositis in pediatric cancer patients, and only more randomized clinical trials are needed to establish clearer guidelines to elucidate which combination of wavelength, energy dose, and number of sessions provide better results.
