Abstract
Meningitis is a potentially serious infection that affects the meninges, the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by different infectious agents such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi and presents high morbidity and mortality rates, especially when not treated early. The objective of this study is to analyze and assess the risks associated with meningitis in pregnant women and discuss effective strategies for the clinical management of this condition during pregnancy. This study aimed to conduct an integrative literature review, using methods to synthesize the results of studies related to multiprofessional intervention in cardiac arrest and resuscitation. The search methodology was conducted by exploring the databases of the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), and Brazilian Nursing Database (BDNEF). Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) were used in combination with the boolean operator AND, following the approach: Meningitis AND Pregnancy AND Pregnancy Complications, resulting in a total of 519 studies. Adequate clinical approach and safe antibiotic administration during pregnancy are essential for the successful management of bacterial meningitis in pregnant women. In summary, this study highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary and integrated approach in managing meningitis in pregnant women. Cooperation between healthcare professionals, managers, and researchers is crucial to improve care and assistance to pregnant women with meningitis, aiming to protect maternal and fetal health. We hope that the results of this review contribute to the enhancement of clinical protocols and care guidelines, enabling a more effective and safe approach for pregnant women affected by meningitis, resulting in better outcomes and quality of life for these women and their babies.
