Use of Resin Infiltrant (ICON®) in Conservative Treatment of White Spot Lesions: An Integrative Review

Abstract

Minimally invasive dentistry aims to preserve healthy dental structures and prioritize conservative approaches over mechanical interventions. Dental caries, a common condition, can significantly affect quality of life if left untreated. In addition to caries, conditions such as enamel hypoplasia, fluorosis, and molar-incisor hypomineralization can also cause white spots on teeth. The resin infiltrant technique shows promise in providing an effective solution for treating these lesions by filling the interprismatic spaces of the enamel, preventing caries progression, and improving both aesthetics and dental resistance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze, through an integrative literature review, the efficacy of the resin infiltrant (ICON®) in the conservative treatment of white spot lesions, following the principles of minimally invasive dentistry. This research consisted of an integrative literature review of a basic nature, with a qualitative approach, exploratory objective, and bibliographic modality. The platforms used for the research included PUBMED/MedLine, Scielo, and BVS, focusing on articles published in the last five years (2019-2024). The resin infiltrant ICON® is highly effective in halting, remineralizing, and masking white spots of various causes. Its long-term results have been positive, showing no significant impacts on color, stability, microhardness, gloss, or smoothness. Additionally, being a quick, painless, and minimally invasive technique, it enjoys good acceptance among patients, who express satisfaction with the ease of the procedure and its results.
