Introduction: The inappropriate use of weight loss medications has increased, due to the search for quick solutions for weight control, but resulting in health risks, such as cardiovascular, metabolic and neurological problems. The lack of medical supervision worsens adverse effects, making the practice dangerous. Objective: The study aims to analyze the adverse effects of inappropriate use of weight loss medications, highlighting the main risks and suggesting safe and sustainable alternatives, such as the integration of medical, nutritional and psychological guidance, in addition to lifestyle changes. Methodology: An exploratory and descriptive bibliographic review was carried out, searching databases such as SciELO and PubMed, using descriptors in Portuguese and English. Full, freely accessible articles published between 2020 and 2024 were included. Results and Discussion: The analysis revealed the risks of uncontrolled use of medications such as sibutramine, pointing to the importance of professional guidance. Many patients who used these medications without supervision experienced serious side effects, reinforcing the need for multidisciplinary monitoring. Conclusion: The study concludes that the inappropriate use of weight loss medications poses serious health risks. Implementing educational and preventive programs is essential to promote safer and more effective weight loss practices, with medical support and lifestyle changes.
