Abstract
Introduction: Fuchs' Endothelial Dystrophy is a degenerative ocular condition that compromises the endothelial layer of the cornea, crucial for maintaining corneal transparency and visual function. Characterized by the progressive degeneration of endothelial cells, the progression of this disease can lead to blurred vision and eye pain due to the accumulation of fluid in the cornea. Early diagnosis is of paramount importance for effective management and preservation of vision, as timely treatment can prevent significant progression of the disease.
Objectives: Analyze and improve approaches for the early diagnosis of Fuch's Endothelial Dystrophy. Methodology: To obtain data, resources from the following repositories were used: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), PubMed and Latin American Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS). A variety of sources, including scientific articles, monographs and journals, were examined to extract pertinent information on the subject. Results and Discussions: The study indicates that both endothelial cell counting microscopy and optical coherence tomography (OCT) are effective tools for the early diagnosis of Fuchs Endothelial Dystrophy. Endothelial cell counting microscopy revealed a significant decrease in endothelial cell density and the presence of abnormal cells, which is indicative of early stages of the disease. OCT provided detailed images of corneal thickness and allowed visualization of changes in the endothelial layer, facilitating the identification of edema and irregularities in the corneal structure. Conclusion: The study demonstrated that the combination of endothelial cell counting microscopy and optical coherence tomography (OCT) is crucial for the early diagnosis of Fuchs Endothelial Dystrophy. These techniques, by offering a detailed analysis of cell density and structural changes in the cornea, allow for early detection of the disease and the implementation of more effective interventions.
