Abstract
ABSTRACT
The article aims to review the literature on neonatal sepsis (NS), focusing on the main signs and symptoms in newborns (NB). Sepsis is a severe systemic inflammatory response, often leading to septic shock and death in NB due to the immaturity of their immune systems. The review was conducted in the PubMed database using the Health Science Descriptors (DeCS): "sepsis", "children", and "signs and symptoms", including studies published between 2018 and 2023.
Five relevant articles were selected, highlighting common symptoms of NS, such as lethargy, respiratory difficulties, and changes in inflammatory markers, like C-reactive protein and procalcitonin. Additionally, risks associated with catheter use and poor hospital hygiene were noted, which increase the incidence of infections.
In conclusion, NS remains a major challenge in hospitals, with high mortality rates. Early detection of clinical signs is crucial to improving prognosis, and further studies are needed to deepen the understanding of this condition.
