Introduction: Depression is a common and debilitating condition among patients with neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. This condition can worsen existing neurological symptoms and significantly impact quality of life. Despite its relevance, depression is often underdiagnosed and inadequately treated in this group of patients.
Objective: Review therapeutic interventions and identify the main challenges in managing depression in patients with neurodegenerative diseases. Methodology: The research was carried out in August 2024, through online access to the following databases: Documentation on Health Sciences in Latin America and the Caribbean (LILACS), Health Sciences Information Center in Latin America and the Caribbean (Bireme ), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) and Virtual Health Library (VHL). Results and Discussion: The review revealed that treating depression in patients with neurodegenerative diseases involves a combination of medication, psychotherapy and non-pharmacological interventions such as physical activity and occupational therapies. However, these methods face significant challenges, such as the difficulty in distinguishing between depressive symptoms and the direct effects of neurodegenerative diseases, and the need to carefully adjust medication dosage due to interactions and side effects. Psychotherapy can be effective, but is hampered by disease progression and reduced cognitive capacity. Non-pharmacological interventions can improve mood and quality of life, but adherence is complicated by motor and cognitive limitations. In short, effective treatment requires an integrated and adaptive approach to optimize patient outcomes and quality of life. Final Considerations: The management of depression in patients with neurodegenerative diseases is complex and multifaceted, involving medications, psychotherapy and non-pharmacological approaches. Although there are several interventions available, each faces specific challenges related to the interaction with the symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases and the functional capacity of patients.
