Obstetric Emergencies: A Review of the Scientific Literature

Abstract

Obstetric emergencies pose significant challenges in the healthcare field, requiring swift and effective action from the multidisciplinary team to prevent adverse outcomes. Physicians play a central role in this context, being responsible for initial assessment, accurate diagnosis, and stabilization of both mother and fetus, ensuring timely interventions. This literature review aims to analyze in detail the role of physicians in managing obstetric emergencies, highlighting their competencies, the importance of an interdisciplinary approach, and the challenges faced in the clinical setting. The bibliographic search was conducted in the PubMed, SciELO, and LILACS databases, using keywords such as "obstetric emergencies," "medical care," and "physician role." The findings underscore the importance of physicians in the early identification of complications, the implementation of evidence-based emergency care protocols, and effective communication with the multidisciplinary team. Continuous education and the development of robust clinical protocols are essential to ensure the quality of care provided and to improve perinatal outcomes.
