Abstract

Introduction: The management of polytrauma patients is challenging, especially in emergency settings, due to the complexity and severity of multiple injuries. Rapid response protocols, such as ABCDE, ATLS, PHTLS, and XABCDE, are essential for standardizing care and improving quality and survival. The evolution of these protocols reflects a growing understanding of the critical needs of patients, but challenges persist in their implementation and customization. Objectives: To evaluate the impact of implementing rapid response protocols in the care of polytrauma patients, analyzing their effectiveness in reducing mortality and associated complications, as well as identifying limitations and opportunities for improving these protocols. Methodology: A systematic literature review was conducted with publications from the last 10 years (January 2014 to August 2024). The search covered electronic databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and SciELO. Inclusion criteria were peer-reviewed articles focusing on the implementation and effectiveness of rapid response protocols in polytrauma patients. Data analysis involved a qualitative comparison of studies regarding effectiveness, clinical practices, and influencing factors. Results and Discussion: Rapid response protocols are crucial for the initial triage and management of polytrauma patients, contributing to reduced mortality and improved clinical outcomes. Protocols like ABCDE and ATLS provide effective guidelines, while PHTLS, with the introduction of "X," prioritizes severe hemorrhage control. In Brazil, efficient implementation of these protocols is vital due to the high trauma mortality rate. Results highlight the importance of effective communication, continuous training, and adapting protocols to local conditions. Conclusion: The implementation and refinement of rapid response protocols, combined with the training of healthcare teams and efficient resource management, are fundamental for improving prognosis and quality of life for polytrauma patients. Continuous adoption of these guidelines, along with ongoing research, is essential to address challenges and enhance the effectiveness of care.
