Abstract
The Chagas Disease is caused by the protozoan Trypanossoma cruzi and its main vector is the Triatoma infestans. The disease affects several organs and tissues on the host’s body in both acute and chronic form, especially the central nervous system and the heart. The main objective of this study is to identify the most prominent challenges for controlling Chagas Disease on Primary Health Care in Brazil. This study is an integrative review, the research was made using the data bases Medline, Scielo, LILACS and ScienceDirect using the descriptors “Chagas Disease” and “Primary Health Care”. After rigorous filtration, 20 studies were included in the review. They highlighted the importance of the Primary Health Care and well-drawn plan of actions to the national control of Chagas Disease, as well as the insufficient capacitation of the health professionals, the population’s low educational levels and difficulties related to the diagnosis and treatment as the main challenges to mitigate the situation of the infirmity. Therefore, the Primary Health Care is indispensable for controlling the Chagas Disease in Brazil and its most prominent challenges are the lack of health professional’s capacitation to handle the illness, the lack of infrastructure for diagnosis and adequate treatment, as well as other socioeconomic problems.
