Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neuropsychiatric condition in childhood, characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. The increased use of digital devices has raised concerns about the possible negative effects of screen time on child development, especially among children with ADHD. Given the above, the objective of this study is to conduct a scoping review of the most recent findings on the relationship between ADHD and screen time in children. The study is a scoping review, the review was conducted following the guidelines of the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) protocol. Articles published in English, Portuguese and Spanish from the last four years were included. The databases searched were PubMed, MedLine, LILACS and SciELO. The search resulted in a total of 158 articles, of which in the end 20 met the inclusion criteria. Most studies indicated an association between more screen time and increased ADHD symptoms. Studies have shown that factors such as sleep quality and level of physical activity also mediate the relationship between screen time and ADHD symptoms. The results of this scoping review show a consistent trend that elevated screen time is associated with increased ADHD symptoms in children. Additional factors, such as parental supervision and incorporating regular physical activity, appear to play a significant role in mitigating the negative effects of screen time. This scoping review highlights the need for more robust, longitudinal future studies to clarify the causal relationship between screen time and ADHD symptoms. Interventions that aim to reduce screen time and improve content quality, along with promoting healthy habits such as physical activity and adequate sleep, may be beneficial for children with ADHD.
