ANALYSIS OF THE EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF EPILEPSY MORBIDITY IN THE STATE OF ESPÍRITO SANTO BETWEEN 2020 AND 2024.

Abstract

Epilepsy is a non-infectious neurological disease characterized by the presence of atypical activity in the central nervous system, and is a highly prevalent public health disease that impacts health systems, especially in developing countries. Therefore, the objective of this study is to delimit the epidemiological profile of epilepsy morbidity in Espírito Santo in the last 5 years, characterizing percentages related to the variables present in the Hospital Information System. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and observational study. A survey of data was carried out by the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS), through DATASUS. The data were collected in the state of Espírito Santo, during the period from January 2020 to June 2024, relating the variables municipality of hospitalization, year of hospitalization, sex and age group. The results showed that there were 5887 cases of epilepsy in the state, with Vitória accounting for 22%, 29% in 2023, 62% of the hospitalizations in males, and 1 to 4 year-olds in the age group accounting for 18% of the visits in the last 5 years of analysis. Finally, the epidemiological profile of epilepsy morbidity in the state of Espírito Santo between 2020 and 2024 is characterized, with males aged 1 to 4 years treated in 2023 in the city of Vitória.
