Precocious puberty is defined as the onset of secondary sexual development before the age of 8 in girls and 9 in boys. This phenomenon can be classified into two main types: central precocious puberty (true) and peripheral precocious puberty (pseudo-puberty). Studying and comparing the clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic characteristics of central and peripheral precocious puberty is crucial for improving care and health outcomes for affected children. Distinguishing between the two types of precocious puberty allows for the application of specific and more effective therapeutic approaches, promoting a better long-term quality of life. Furthermore, awareness of these conditions can aid in the early identification of cases, enabling timely interventions and minimizing adverse impacts on the physical and emotional health of patients. Although central and peripheral precocious puberty present clear differences in their clinical, laboratory, and imaging characteristics, early recognition and treatment are key to optimizing long-term outcomes. Understanding the nuances of each form of precocious puberty is essential for developing effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, providing patients with improved quality of life and minimizing the adverse impacts of the condition. A comprehensive and detailed diagnostic approach, utilizing hormonal assays, GnRH stimulation tests, and imaging techniques such as ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging, is of utmost importance. When used complementarily, these diagnostic tools provide a thorough and accurate assessment of precocious puberty, essential for effective clinical management and optimizing patient outcomes.
