This article reviews the literature on the use of anesthetics in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), comparing ketamine, propofol, etomidate, remifentanil, methohexital, and thiopental. Its aim is to evaluate how different anesthetics impact the efficacy and safety of ECT. The review encompasses studies published between 2014 and 2024, sourced from PubMed and the Journal of the Portuguese Society of Anesthesiology. It focuses on meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and randomized controlled trials. The findings suggest that the choice of anesthetic should be personalized, taking into account potential side effects and the expertise of the medical team. Despite advances in anesthesia, there is no definitive evidence favoring one anesthetic over another, and the literature shows that the duration of convulsive seizures is not directly associated with improved clinical outcomes.
