Abstract

The long-term success of all-ceramic restorations depends on the adhesion between the ceramic material and the tooth structure, and the correct selection of surface treatment is of paramount importance. Objective: A literature review was carried out to evaluate the best treatment protocol for the surface of glass ceramics, in order to provide adequate prosthetic adhesion of the restorative material. Methodology: For this, scientific articles available in the PubMed database were used, using the following descriptors “Ceramics”, “Cementation”, “Surface” and “Treatment”. Results: The ceramic-cement-tooth connection will be subject to a complex environment in the oral cavity, being influenced by several extrinsic factors, such as temperature changes, saliva, daily intake of food and drink, bite force and other habits. To achieve good adhesion quality, it is important to consider the type of ceramic, the surface characteristics and the desired mechanical properties, in order to choose the best etching protocol. Conclusion: It was concluded that the surface treatment with hydrofluoric acid and silane is still considered the gold standard for glass ceramics, however, the self-etching ceramic primer shows promising results.
