ABSTRACT

Obesity, one of the most urgent global epidemics of the 21st century, represents a significant public health challenge worldwide. Therefore, this article investigates the impact of obesity on human metabolism and its relationship with oral health, recognizing oral health as a reflection of the general health of the human organism, reflecting not only hygiene practices, but also underlying metabolic conditions. To provide an overview of the topic, an exploratory research was carried out using the CAPES Journal Portal database, PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, MedLine, VHL and Google Scholar, with a chronological cut between 2013 and 2023. Search words were used such as "obesity and metabolic disorders", "obesity and insulin resistance", "obesity on body composition" and "effects of obesity on oral health". The research followed a qualitative approach to data analysis. The results indicate that obesity is intrinsically linked to Metabolic Syndrome, a condition that increases the risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other health problems. With regard to oral health, it was observed that there is an association between obesity and diseases such as periodontitis and tooth decay, although the literature presents some disagreements and gaps in consensus regarding this association. Still, the results of this exploratory research offer important insights to understand the complex interaction between obesity, human metabolism and oral health, without proposing specific strategies to mitigate the situations highlighted in the literature. Understanding that obesity is an increasingly common condition in modern society and can influence the oral health of individuals, an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to health care is essential, considering the complex interrelationships between metabolism and oral health and general health.Keywords: Obesity.
