Abstract

Sports dentistry, focusing on oral health and athletic performance, has become increasingly relevant, particularly with the rise of high-intensity physical activities like CrossFit. Mouthguards, essential for preventing orofacial injuries, are recommended to minimize the severity of dental and soft tissue trauma during physical exercise. The use of these devices dates back to the late 19th century when boxers began using them, evolving from materials like cotton and adhesive tapes to the development of rubber and gutta-percha mouthguards. Currently, mouthguards are classified into three types: stock, boil-and-bite, and custom-made. Stock mouthguards are pre-fabricated and affordable but less adjustable, while boil-and-bite types offer better adaptation after being molded with heat. Custom-made mouthguards, although more expensive, provide the best protection and comfort due to their precise fit. Literature indicates that mouthguards with a thickness of 3 to 4 mm are ideal for impact absorption and effective protection. Despite advancements, widespread adoption of these devices still faces challenges such as discomfort and inadequate guidance. Awareness and education about proper use and maintenance of mouthguards are crucial for improving acceptance among athletes. Studies highlight the importance of the sports dentist's role in promoting prevention and developing educational materials for effective oral protection in high-intensity sports.
