GLIOMA RESECTION: CHALLENGES AND CLINICAL STRATEGIES

The resection of gliomas represents a significant challenge in neurosurgery due to the anatomical and functional complexity of the brain. INTRODUCTION: The surgical removal of gliomas, primary brain tumors, is essential for disease control and improving patients’ quality of life. However, the proximity of these tumors to eloquent areas of the brain makes the surgery complex and risky. OBJECTIVES: Review the challenges and strategies in glioma resection. METHODOLOGY: An integrative review was conducted using the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS) databases, with health science descriptors such as “glioma”, “surgical resection”, and “neurosurgery”, combined through the boolean operators AND and OR. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The analysis of the studies revealed that advanced techniques such as intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging, neuronavigation, and intraoperative brain mapping have been fundamental in increasing surgical precision and minimizing functional damage. Additionally, the integration of technologies such as 5-ALA guided fluorescence and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring has significantly contributed to the safe and effective resection of gliomas. CONCLUSION: The adoption of multimodal and personalized approaches, combined with technological advances, is crucial to improving surgical outcomes and the quality of life for patients with gliomas.
