Abstract

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is one of the main dementias that currently affect the elderly population. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a global public health concern, characterized by its substantial impact on the quality of life of patients and their caregivers, as well as the significant burden it places on healthcare systems around the world. The objective of this work is to spatially and temporally analyze the epidemiological profile of cases of hospitalization for Alzheimer's in Brazilian hospitals during the period from January 2013 to December 2023. Methodology: this is an epidemiological, retrospective study with a quantitative approach, based on collecting data regarding mortality from Alzheimer's disease from January 2013 to December 2023, in the five Brazilian regions. For this collection, the Information Technology Department of the Unified Health System (DATASUS) was used, based on variables that guide the study's analysis objective. The data collected was analyzed using measurements of quantities based on mathematical techniques such as calculating percentages, probabilities, averages, ratios and proportions, along the lines described by (Shitsuka, et al., 2018). Furthermore, to support the study, a search was carried out in the following databases: Science Direct; Medline, Pubmed, Lilacs and SciElo, with the references being analyzed quantitatively and descriptively. Results: In this sense, it was reported that in Brazil 59,573 hospitalizations occurred due to Alzheimer's in the period analyzed, the highest number of hospitalizations was in the Southeast region. The Southeast region was the most reported in terms of the number of hospitalized patients and individuals who died from heart failure was the Northeast region. The largest age group affected was between 60 and 69 years old. Males were the gender most affected by this pathology. Regarding ethnicity, more white patients are admitted. Even though the region with the highest number of hospitalizations in this study is the Southeast region, the Southeast region paid for more resources with its hospitalizations than the other regions. Conclusion: Interventions in primary health care help reduce the need for hospitalizations, promoting independence and preserving patients' quality of life. Patients with Alzheimer's disease can also benefit significantly from these practices, which may contribute to the reduction in rates observed in this study.
