Abstract

Introduction: Breastfeeding is widely recognized as an essential practice for the promotion of child health and development. In this way, breast milk is composed of a complex combination of nutrients, antibodies and bioactive factors adjusted specifically to the needs of the baby, promoting healthy development and protection against various diseases. Exclusive breastfeeding strengthens the immune system, reducing the incidence of respiratory, gastrointestinal and otitis media infections, and is associated with a lower risk of chronic diseases in adulthood, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Methodology: Searches were carried out in databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, VHL and SCIELO, using descriptors related to breastfeeding and child development. Original studies published between 2015 and 2024 that directly addressed the benefits of breastfeeding were included. The critical analysis of the data focused on the methodological quality of the studies, ensuring a comprehensive and relevant review. Results and discussions: Exclusive breastfeeding is fundamental for the nutrition and development of the baby, preventing chronic malnutrition, such as dwarfism, and promoting cognitive development. Breastfed children tend to perform better in IQ tests and cognitive skills in childhood and adolescence, due to the presence of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in breast milk, essential for brain development. In addition, breastfeeding strengthens the emotional bond between mother and child, fundamental for the psychosocial development of the child. Studies reveal that breastfeeding is associated with improvements in several areas of child development, including motor skills, communication and social interactions. Final Considerations: The importance of public policies that promote and support the practice of exclusive breastfeeding. The study reinforces the need to strengthen health programs that encourage breastfeeding, ensuring that all mothers have access to the necessary support.
