Septoplasty, a surgery aimed at correcting deviations of the nasal septum, is designed to improve nasal ventilation and, consequently, respiratory quality. Nasal septal deviation often leads to chronic nasal obstruction, sinusitis, and respiratory difficulties, affecting sleep quality and potentially resulting in disorders such as sleep apnea and snoring. This literature review explores how septoplasty impacts not only respiratory function but also psychological aspects related to sleep.
The analysis of recent studies revealed that surgical correction of septal deviation can significantly improve sleep quality, reduce psychological symptoms such as anxiety and depression, and enhance patients' quality of life. The review methodology included articles published between 2004 and 2024 on SciELO and PubMed platforms, using descriptors such as "Insomnia" and "Septal Deviation."
The results show that septal deviation negatively impacts quality of life by causing nasal obstruction and sleep-related issues. Septoplasty has demonstrated significant benefits, including a reduction in symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea and improvements in cardiovascular function. However, complications such as bleeding and infections are possible. Surgical treatment is more effective than non-surgical approaches and can lead to significant improvements in sleep quality and patients' psychological state.
The review concludes that septoplasty is an effective alternative for treating septal deviations, with a positive impact on overall quality of life and patients' psychological health.
